How will Senate Bill (SB) 770 affect me and my employees?
SB 770 was signed into law by Governor Brown on September 24, 2013, to expand coverage for Paid Family Leave (PFL). Individuals covered by State Disability Insurance (SDI), which is administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD), are also eligible for PFL benefits.
Currently, individuals can receive up to six weeks of benefits within a 12-month period to care for a seriously ill child, parent, spouse or registered domestic partner, or to bond with a minor child. Beginning July 1, 2014, PFL benefits are available to individuals who take time off from work to care for a seriously ill parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling. For more information about PFL, visit the visit the EDD website, refer to thePFL Fact Sheet, or call 877-238-4373.
